In den Jahren 1872 bis 1874 versuchte die österreichisch-ungarische Nordpolarexpedition unter der Leitung von Carl Weyprecht und Julius von Payer eine schiffbaren Nordost-Passage durch das Polarmeer zu finden. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte noch niemand die Passage erfolgreich durchfahren. Erik Gornik und Walter Albrecht zeichnen in diesem Video die Payer-Weyprecht-Expedition nach, die letztendlich zwei Jahre lang im Eis steckenblieb.

Der Fotojournalist Rolf Stang, München, nahm im Juli 2004 auf Einladung des Reiseveranstalters Ikarus Tours, Königstein im Taunus, an einer damals seltenen mehrwöchigen Expedition zum Franz-Josef-Land auf dem russischen Eisbrecher "Kapitän Dranitsyn" teil. Ausgangshafen war Kirkenes. Diese 55minütige Dokumentation aus dem Jahr 2013 zeigt neben wenigen dokumentarischen Darstellungen nur Fotos von Rolf Stang, der zuvor ca. 50 Jahre lang analog fotografierte. Der wortlose Stummfilm zum nachdenken. 2014 stiess ich beim herumstöbern mit Google Earth auf kuriose Strukturen in den Gewässern von Franz Josef Land. Bei weiteren Nachforschungen fand ich weitere faszinierende Gegebenheiten rund um den Archipel im hohen russischen Norden... GRID-Arendal's Managing Director Peter Prokosch jined the expedition to Franz Josef Land from 9-22 August 2012 on board m/v Ortelius of Oceanwide Expedtions. Peter Prokosch gave a lecture on Arctic environmental developments and Linking Tourism & Conservation. In 2009 Franz Josef Land (together with the Northern part of Novaya Zemlya) was declared a national park and named the "Russian Arctic National Park". In 2011 the government initiated a major cleaning up of wastes from some of the islands that were formerly used as military sites. The goal of the expedition is to learn more about these important developments in the high Russian Arctic and how they can be supported. The expedition also provided an opportunity to interview expedition participants on how they would like to see the Arctic in 2052.

In 2007, Borge and Thomas Ulrich started on an old dream; to follow in Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansens footsteps through Frans Josef land. They started at the North Pole 1st of may, it took the them one and a half month across threashrous summer drift ice to reach Eva Live Island in the north east of the arcipelago. From here they continued, following Nansens route from one island to the other until they finally reached cape Flora in the south parts 24th of July. Here they had to wait almost three weeks, and were forced to live of the land, before the 44 feet long sailboat Athene managed to rech them and picked up the two explorers 13th of August.

In 1895-96 two prominent Norwegian explorers spent a difficult winter in a makeshift shelter here. Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen took refuge on this rather bleak headland after their failed attempt to reach the Geographic North Pole. Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic guests spent some time exploring the site and examining the remains of their shelter.
