Spain deployed its military to the Moroccan border Tuesday as thousands of people jumped fences and swam onto European soil for the second day in a row amid a deepening diplomatic spat. The two countries signed an agreement three decades ago to expel all those who swim across the border. Yet many arriving Tuesday were sub-Saharan Africans who are usually fleeing poverty or violence back home. The arriving adults were being transferred to Ceuta’s main football stadium as they waited to be returned to Morocco while those thought to be minors were sent to warehouses run by a charity group. At least 6,000 migrants have reached Spain's Ceuta enclave from neighbouring Morocco, a record number over a single day, Spanish officials say. They say the migrants - who include about 1,500 minors - either swam around the border fences that jut out into the sea or walked across at low tide. They are said to be mostly from Morocco. Spain says it has already sent some 2,700 back - but not the minors. Spain has sent 2,700 people back to Morocco, out of the more than 6,000 who swam from the North African country into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta over the past two days. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed the move on Tuesday, adding that Madrid has sent 200 extra police to Ceuta to reinforce the 1,200 officers currently guarding the border with Morocco. Around 5,000 people crossed the border from Morocco into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on Monday, a single-day record, Spanish officials said. The surge came as Morocco lodged a diplomatic protest against Spain for accepting a rebel leader for medical treatment. Thousands of young migrants, including about 1,000 minors, swam or waded across the heavily fortified border. Others floated across in inflatable dinghies or swimming rings. At least one person drowned while attempting to cross, according to local media reports. The arrivals were checked by the Red Cross and taken to a migrant reception center. The Spanish exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla are Africa's only land border with the European Union, making it a target for people seeking to migrate to Europe. The BBC's Africa Eye has uncovered evidence which raises new questions for the Moroccan and Spanish authorities about the fate of dozens of migrants trying to cross into territory in north Africa which is part of Spain.
