Harpy Eagle Largest Eagles in the World With its expressive face, collar of feathers, and black and grey tones, there’s no denying that the Harpy Eagle is a striking creature. But if its distinct appearance isn’t impressive enough, its height and wingspan certainly are. These powerful birds of prey can reach up to 3 feet 5 inches in height, with an overall wingspan of up to 7 feet 4 inches Its incredible size and unique appearance has made the Harpy Eagle quite a popular figure on the internet. Photographs of the large eagle often pop up on Reddit, where people marvel at its size. The Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey is throwing our hat into the ever-growing pantheon of avian Super Bowl prognosticators! This video features Grayson, the Center’s Harpy Eagle, making his best raptor choice for the winner of Super Bowl LVII. He has a choice of two colored boxes, decorated with each team’s insignia on the side and… wait for it… a piece of meat as incentive on top of each box! Will he choose Kansas City or Philadelphia? This fun exercise is part of our avian ambassadors' ongoing enrichment program, designed to keep all of our raptors engaged, alert and interested in new things in their environment. Varied feeding times, different diet yummies (including chicken, quail, rabbit, rat, and mouse), opportunities to play with objects and explore different colors, textures, and especially smells connected with their dietary rotation—plus expert staff daily monitoring each individual bird’s health issues, weight and exercise —all help to contribute to the considerable extension of the lives of birds in captivity. As a very special example, our Bataleur Eagle named Kwang is 54 years old, and that species has an average lifespan of 25-30 years! Grayson is going to celebrate his 21st birthday this spring and is in stellar condition. Harpy Eagles average lifespan is around 30 years in the wild and we feel confident that he will be wowing guests at the center for many years to come. He has gained quite a fan club in his years with us and has pushed Skye, our big female Bald Eagle who greets guests near the gift shop, for "favorite bird at the WCBOP!" One of the world's largest and strongest raptors is the harpy eagle. The back talons are about four to five inches long, making them comparable to a grizzly bear's claws. The talons of the harpy eagle can lift prey that weighs around their weight with sufficient force and grip. As the top predators in their food chain, harpy eagles eat sloths, opossums, and monkeys. They are still sneaky predators, gliding through woodlands and keeping watch like a covert drone, despite having wings that can extend approximately six and a half feet.
